Crochet For Beginners
Starting a new hobby can be overwhelming. This Rise 360 course was created to help beginner crochet artists quickly organize the abundance of information available.
The Problem
Crochet is one of my favourite hobbies, and has been so beneficial for my creative and mental health. However, when I first began the hobby I was a bit overwhelmed by the enormous amount of resources and information regarding crochet. I realized that the abundance of information often leaves beginners feeling daunted and unsure where to start.
The Solution
I wanted to synthesize the available information into an accessible eLearning course for aspiring crocheters. I decided to use Articulate Rise 360 because it allowed me to quickly build the course, and is perfect for microlearning. Rise also looks great and works well on all devices, so the course is extremely user-friendly. I was also able to incorporate a Storyline module into the course that allowed me to create a custom scenario for the user to explore types of crochet projects.
My Process
Using my own experience and online research, I collected and summarized the most important aspects of crochet. I wrote out my ideas and organized the information to create lesson modules. During this phase, I iterated on possible ways to present the information.
I created the Yarn Choice Simulator as a way for the user to see how the information they learned in the course could be applied to real projects. This was a great way to enhance retention of the material, as the learner is able to establish personal connections. I used Twine to help plan the scenario, which was extremely helpful for keeping myself organized with all the branching. When creating the course in Storyline, I made sure to keep the font and colour scheme consistent with the rest of the Rise course. I also created my own graphics using Procreate.
In this part of the course, I learned a lot about the importance of prototyping when creating a project with many slides.
At the end of the course, the learner is provided with a job aid that I created using Canva. This job aid serves as a quick reference to what they learned during the course. This tool can help to promote recall when applying the knowledge to real life.
